Get Off Your Duff!!
Easy ways to get outside this semester
Mattson, Neil
Issue date: 9/3/08 Section: Outdoor
As summer break becomes fall semester and our minds shift from things we would rather be doing to our classes, we must find a way to prioritize. While our priorities are important, it is also important to keep leisure activities in mind.
School can be a real grind if you let it. Rather than letting routine grind us down, we must find ways to get outside, breathe, and let it all go. Pocatello is a good place to do just that.
Right in our backyard is a playground many of us don't even think about. Others of us can't wait until the next time we are "there". Borrowing from Stephen King, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. And Jill a dull girl. Before this academic pursuit we've engaged in drives us mad, we should get out and play. A few local ways to do so:
1. Turn off your TV.
2. Go for a walk. The local geography offers a variety of hiking options, and the trail system is extensive. Best of all, it's free.
3. Take a ride. Along Pocatello's great hiking, belies great mountain biking. It's a very underestimated thrill, and a great way to keep your legs in shape for winter.
4. Can't afford golf clubs? Most of us can't. Disc golf is a beginner friendly, affordable alternative. I recently began playing myself, and on my first day skipped a disc into the open window of a moving car. You can't buy laughs like that.
5. Go fishing. Throw a line in the water, crack a beer, and wait.
While this list is far from exhaustive, we hope it is helpful. Just a few suggestions for breaking the monotony.
