An online textbook company now offers college students a low-cost alternative to purchasing expensive textbooks. For a rental fee, students receive textbooks in the mail, use them for the semester and return them using a prepaid shipping label.

CampusBookRentals.com, which was founded in Syracuse, Utah, opened its virtual doors in August 2007 to Weber State University students, but has now rented to hundreds of students at 178 unique universities in 29 states. Students log on to www.campusbookrentals.com search textbooks by ISBN, Title, Author or Keyword and choose their rental period. The books then ship directly to their address. Near the end of the semester, students send the books back for free.

Students using this service typically spend 50 to 75 percent less than they would if they purchase books in their campus bookstore or online, an average savings of 250 dollars. The service is offered universally to any student in the United States with virtually every textbook available. Items not available for rent include university-specific labs and custom printed material.

CampusBookRentals.com also offers students textbook scholarships. It also donates time and a portion of the rental proceeds to one major humanitarian project per year. This year, CampusBookRentals.com has committed to donating 100 laptops to the One Laptop Per Child Foundation. Students can also earn money by referring friends.
